Five Years of Safety Excellence

On May 13, 2024, our Fraser Mine, part of our Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO), was awarded the 2023 John T. Ryan National Trophy for Metal Mines for the best safety performance in Canada from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). Moreover, on a regional level, our Nickel Rim South Mine, also part of Sudbury INO, and Raglan Mine, took home the John T. Ryan Regional Trophy in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, respectively.

"Both awards demonstrate our team’s dedication to a safety-first culture, and are a testament to the teamwork of our mining operations in Sudbury and a true validation of a workforce that brings SafeWork to life every day. As Nickel Rim South enters care and maintenance this year, we honour the remarkable legacy our employees have achieved in the area of safety performance."

Peter Xavier - Vice President, Sudbury INO

This marks the second year in a row that Sudbury INO was awarded this prestigious industry award as its Nickel Rim South Mine took home the national trophy last year. And this marks the fifth year in a row that the national award has been in Glencore hands as our Raglan Mine collected the award in 2019 for three years straight sharing it with our now-closed Matagami Mine in 2020.

Winning the 2023 John T. Ryan National Trophy for Metal Mines is thanks to our dedicated people who make up our workforce and who rely on one another each and every day to bring SafeWork to life in our facilities.

Our SafeWork framework is risk-based, focusing on eliminating fatalities and serious injuries by identifying the hazards that can result in fatal incidents, and developing life-saving behaviours and protocols to target them.

SafeWork aims to provide everyone within our business with the knowledge and tools to perform every task safely; the key message is that every individual has the authority to stop unsafe work.
