EVR - Elk Valley Resources

What we do

We produce high quality steelmaking coal, a key transition-enabling resource that is a necessary input material for steel – helping construct the transportation, infrastructure, and technology of the future. From everyday household appliances to critical infrastructure such as rail, bridges, hospitals and schools, steelmaking coal is an essential input into the steel used in products that can improve the quality of life for people around the world.

Responsible mining in the Elk Valley

EVR operates four steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley of British Columbia, providing jobs for more than 5,000 people. We are committed to responsible resource development, environmental performance and water quality in the region, and building strong partnerships with Indigenous Peoples and within the communities where we operate.

Steelmaking coal

Steel has an important role in society today. It’s a vital resource in building critical infrastructure around the world as demand for new infrastructure grows, as well as its role in supporting the energy transition in Canada and globally by helping build renewable energy products like wind turbines.

Global population growth, increased urbanization, and a growing middle class are expected to drive long-term demand for steel and the steelmaking coal required to produce it, and EVR can help meet these evolving needs while supporting responsible resource development, environmental stewardship, and our economic and social commitments to communities in the Elk Valley.

Our operations

Steelmaking coal is

an essential ingredient in the production of steel. Also called metallurgical or coking coal, it is necessary for building infrastructure such as rail, bridges and schools which can improve the quality of life for people around the world.

Steel and the steelmaking coal used to make it can also support the development of various renewable energy projects in Canada and globally, which can help advance energy transition goals and build on EVR’s legacy in the Elk Valley.

Economic contributions of EVR’s steelmaking coal operations

EVR’s steelmaking coal production is a significant contributor to the local, provincial, and national economies.

A 2022 economic study prepared for the B.C. Chamber of Commerce titled, “Economic Contribution Analysis of Mining Operations in the Elk Valley” found that EVR’s steelmaking coal operations in B.C.’s Elk Valley make up roughly 80% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Southeast British Columbia, sustain more than 30,000 jobs and contribute $1.5 billion in revenues annually to three levels of government across Canada. The study was produced by Deloitte LLP.

EVR is also dedicated to the communities where we operate. As part of this commitment, we invest in sponsorship, community, and charitable programs in local communities and in specific community projects, and participate in local events.
