Working together for a common culture of safety

As part of its commitment to sustainable development, CEZinc has implemented an ambitious program to achieve the highest international health and safety standards. This commitment to the community is based in particular on the safety culture shared by all.

CEZinc ensures the safety of its facilities and operations through a number of measures, including ongoing technical inspections and regular audits. Emergency procedures are reviewed annually as part of a continuous improvement process. An emergency team, consisting of first responders, is ready to intervene at the plant at any time. During simulations, CEZinc sends a team to meet local residents and answer their questions.

In the event of a major industrial accident, CEZinc has two emergency sirens and the Automated Emergency Response System to warn the public. The sirens are located at the corner of the 530 and Boulevard Gérard-Cadieux and on the roof of the CEZinc water treatment plant.

CEZinc is an active member of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield's Joint Municipal-Industrial Committee and works closely with the town, the fire department and Sureté du Québec to ensure the safety of all town residents and users.

Simulation exercises planned for 2024

In order to meet the highest international standards for the management of industrial installations, CEZinc, in collaboration with the local authorities, will carry out a series of emergency simulation exercises in 2024.  These exercises will take place in three phases, in winter, spring and autumn 2024.

In the first phase, an alarm siren was sounded on February 20 to simulate an SO2-SO3 leak.

The second phase will specifically address the risks of a tailings pond dike failure. An information letter has been sent to residents in the affected area in the event of a dike breach. A breach is highly unlikely and the aim is to proactively inform the public of the risks.

The third exercise will be communicated to affected citizens at a later date.

Although the probability of such an event is very low, the purpose of these exercises is to test the effectiveness of the emergency procedures in the event of a major industrial accident and to ensure that the emergency services of CEZinc and the town of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield are coordinated.
