In 2023, following the 100% acquisition of CEZinc by Glencore, an ambitious project to modernize the electrolysis hall of the plant, located in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in Quebec, was launched.
The project, which plans investments of approximately C$200M, is scheduled to continue through to 2025 and will replace all current cells and overhead cranes to uphold the competitiveness of the plant and our Purpose to responsibly source the commodities that advance everyday life.
This large-scale project benefits from the collaboration of a variety of internal CEZinc teams and numerous local and international contractors. Maintaining stringent health and safety standards is a key priority.
The firm AdZ Tecnologia, a subsidiary of Glencore Spain, with recognized expertise in electrolysis halls, is serving as the technical project manager for the project. AdZ Tecnologia coordinates the work of international suppliers responsible for the manufacturing of new cells and overhead cranes, as well as their installation.
The replacement of equipment is preceded by significant preparatory work, particularly in the electrolysis hall. The preparatory work is progressing well and should be completed by the end of August, in time for the shutdown necessary to replace the cells.
"This project is truly the result of a collective effort of which we are very proud. Modernizing an electrolysis hall while maintaining ongoing operations presents many technical challenges. Health and safety are major concerns and our top priority.”
Paul Einarson - CEO of CEZinc
"Coordinating the expertise of numerous collaborators speaking four languages and spread across three continents is an extraordinary task! Both for CEZinc and for all the partners involved, this collaborative experience is deeply enriching.”
Ricardo Sanchez - Technical Director, AdZ Tecnologia
